Scoping is the process of taking the raw transcript data and steno notes from a court reporter and turning it into a polished transcript. It doesn’t just happen with a click of a button. After a court reporter records the proceedings from spoken word, a scopist uses the audio file and computer-aided translation software to format the transcript and check for mistakes. Then they have to edit grammar and punctuation. As you can imagine, a scopist needs to be detail-oriented and able to solve problems while working independently. A scopist’s job is to assist the court reporter in the transcript production process. Many court reporters scope their own transcripts after hours, but court reporters who find themselves with increasing workloads contract work out to scopists. Scopists support the work of a court reporter as an editor of transcripts so the court reporter can regain work-life balance, stop working 12-plus-hour days, produce higher quality transcripts, and get their life back while scaling their business.

Scoping International stands behind the courses and products we offer. Section 1 is completely free for potential students to access and complete. If you make payment for Section 2 but do not access it within 14 days, you may request a refund within those 14 days. There may be a cancellation fee, depending on the payment method. However, once you access any paid section, no refund will be issued even if you do not complete the section.
Scoping isn’t a get-rich-quick program, but it is a real, flexible career with strong earning potential. Your income depends on your experience, speed, and how much you’re willing to work. Our aim is to have our graduates scoping at least 20+ pages per hour, and as you gain skill and consistency, you’ll be able to take on more work and higher-paying jobs.
Most scopists earn between $30,000–$50,000 USD/year, with experienced full-time scopists making $50,000–$70,000+ USD annually. As a freelancer, you’re in charge, how much you make depends on the hours you commit and the relationships you build.
Although it is a self-paced course, students have completed a course like this within 6-12 months. The eight-section course is made up of 35 modules, and each module takes approximately 2-6 hours to complete. The practice section is the longest. It may take weeks to complete as it is the most intensive part of the course.

Starting your own scoping business is an exciting step, and like any new venture, it comes with some essential tools to set you up for success. After graduating from The Complete Scoping Course, you’ll be ready to work with a laptop or desktop computer, plus a few key items like editing software, headphones, and (optionally) a foot pedal. And remember these expenses can typically be written off. The day-to-day overhead costs of being a freelance scopist are very minimal.

No, not to begin with. Because a scopist works so closely with the written and spoken word, they do eventually need to have excellent grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and research skills, but those skills can be learned, and that’s where we come in.
That being said, it is also not necessary to be a native English speaker to work with English legal transcripts. We have trained many scopists whose first language is something other than English, and they are successful in their business.
Critical tests are designed to make sure you truly understand the key skills needed to succeed as a scopist. If you don’t pass a critical test, it’s a sign that you may need more support in mastering an essential concept.
